High blood pressure: stay in control

High blood pressure is one of the main causes of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. Some of the causes of high blood pressure are obesity, little exercise and stress, combined with a hereditary predisposition. If high blood pressure is left untreated, secondary diseases can occur - mostly in the cardiovascular system.

High blood pressure: a widespread illness

High blood pressure (known in medicine as hypertension) is widespread in developed countries. In Germany, around 20 to 30 million people are affected by this illness. The older you get, the higher the risk of developing hypertension. But children and adolescents can also be affected. Lack of exercise and being overweight are the main risk factors. However, there are also people who are slim and sporty, eat a healthy diet and still suffer from hypertension, due to a genetic predisposition.

Dangerous delayed effects

The dangerous thing about high blood pressure is that the consequences become apparent only belatedly. And these delayed effects may be serious. If hypertension goes undetected for many years, it can lead to permanent damage to vital organs - the heart, brain and eyes, for example. Heart attacks and strokes in particular are often caused by high blood pressure. The good news is that if the disease is detected in time, secondary symptoms and diseases of the cardiovascular system can be held back or even avoided altogether.

Treating high blood pressure naturally

If blood pressure is elevated only slightly, medication may not be necessary. The following measures are recommended:

  • Reduce your weight
  • Prepare food that is low in salt.
  • Reduce stress.
  • Exercise regularly. Daily walks or Nordic walking, for instance, are particularly suitable

If these measures are not enough or if your blood pressure is very high, you can take medication in the form of antihypertensives.

Medication used for high blood pressure

Different types of meds are used to lower high blood pressure. Among the best known are: ACE inhibitors, beta blockers, diuretics, potassium antagonists and sartans. Which medicine is best for you depends on different factors, like age and previous medical conditions. Sometimes different medicines are combined to achieve the best possible result. Your doctor will decide on an individual treatment plan with you.
